Open Range was painted from a photo I took from horseback in Billings, MT, while visiting my grandfather’s ranch. It’s a place that always meant a lot to me, and where I spent much time creating art with my grandfather. Unfortunately the Hip Pocket Ranch was cut up and sold into suburbia and the Ranch cabin he designed and built was sold with it. This painting not only carries those memories, but was a real break through in the use of watercolor pencils to accomplish more vibrant colors with watercolors. The original has faded over the years but at one time, the horse popped off the board with real depth.
